Hunter leaned back in his chair, propping his boots on the table, sipping on a glass of whiskey. Logan appeared around the cabin, his focus on the ground, his face stern. Hunter grunted, taking another swig,

“You always look so serious. If you weren’t a wolf, I’d tell you not to worry so much—you’re gonna have worry lines.” He grinned.

Logan snapped his attention to Hunter. “Why are you on my front porch?”

Hunter leaned a little farther. “I got yelled at for the mud I tracked through the house, so I came over here to let Luna cool down.”

Logan smirked. “I told you to take your boots off.” He took the chair across from Hunter, shoving his boots off the table. Hunter caught himself with ease, placing his feet on the floor of the porch, shaking his head. Logan poured himself a drink, taking a sip and then turning it softly in his hand. He sat with his elbows on his knees, staring into the glass. Hunter studied him for a second. Logan frowned.

“What’s on your mind?”

Logan sighed, shaking his head. “You know I’ve been Alpha for a while now.”

Hunter cocked his brow. “Okay…?”

Logan leaned back, resting his arm across the back of the chair, glancing around the compound. “How’s Luna feeling?”

“She is doing good. She tore my ass a new one, but I gave her a reason to forgive me.” Hunter winked.

Logan’s eyes never stopped looking out over his compound. He clearly had something on his mind. Logan’s voice was soft, “That’s good.”

“You’re stalling.”

Logan snapped his head around. “Stalling?”

“Yeah, ask me what you have to ask me.”

Logan smirked. “Am I that easy to read?”

Hunter shook his head, “Not normally, no.” Logan sighed a deep sigh. A rattle-every-bone-in-his-body kind of sigh. “I don’t want to burden you with all the issues I have as Alpha. They aren’t yours to carry.”

Hunter finished his drink, sliding it across the table. “You can’t just keep that shit to yourself; you have to confide in someone. Lay it on me.”

Logan grunted. “I just killed two members for challenging me about the decisions I’ve made.” Hunter swallowed hard; he never wanted the burden of being Alpha. Especially to a pack of misfits. Hell, he never wanted to be a part of a damn pack, but here he was fighting for one. He had respect for Logan.

Logan’s eyes met Hunter’s. “I’ve always kept Pack Haven as a sanctuary for wolves who don’t fit in in your normal pack life. Like Luna and Jessie.”

Hunter nodded. “Yeah I understand. What were they challenging you for if you don’t mind me asking?”

Logan shifted in his chair. “They didn’t agree on my decision to not punish Luna for bringing back so much heat on her.” He cleared his throat. “Also, that I’m letting you and Max walk around with no clue who you guys really are.”

Hunter smirked. “If they were so worried, why didn’t they talk to us?”

Logan shook his head. “They were going to. I stopped them.”

Hunter’s brow twitched. He felt for Logan.
